This post is part 2 of 3 in the series Systems thinking for a symphony of a thousand.

The stage at Walt Disney Concert Hall usually holds around 100 musicians. It can handle a lot more. Here’s how the crew makes it happen for a combined LA Philharmonic/Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela rehearsal of over 300 musicians. There’s far more to setting the stage than simply throwing up a few music stands and some extra chairs.

Gustav Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand is rarely performed with 1000+ musicians. Gustavo Dudamel conducts Mahler’s 8th with 2 orchestras and 16 choirs on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Shrine Auditorium. Then the LA Phil’s Mahler Project moves to Caracas. Mahler 8th in Caracas will be broadcast live in U.S. and Canada movie theaters on Saturday, February 18, 2012 with an encore showing in select theaters on Wednesday, February 29.
